Educational Programs – School Tours

Explore the Blue Mountains Colonial History,

aligned with NSW HSIE K-6 Syllabus

Mountains Tales delivers engaging, location-based educational programs designed to support student learning outcomes across the NSW HSIE syllabus. Using the Blue Mountains as an outdoor classroom, our program connects significant events and people in Australian history, exploring cause and effect, through roleplay and storytelling.

“The 1813 Crossing Tour” introduces students to the early colonial history of the Blue Mountains. Students learn why the Blue Mountains were seen as a natural barrier to expansion. Through engaging narratives, and costume roleplay, students are introduced to Blaxland, Lawson, and Wentworth, and why their 1813 crossing was significant.

Our guides join the student’s coaches in Glenbrook, as we travel through the stories and sites of the 1813 Crossing. The tour concludes in Katoomba, the home of the Three Sisters, just in time for lunch or continue to Mt York where our story continues.

“The 1814 Convict Built Road Tour” Through storytelling, discussion and roleplay, students discover how 30 convicts worked to build a road, the tools they used, and the challenges they faced. Who was William Cox, and what was Governor Macquarie’s expectations of this road.

The tour explains how these roads helped European Exploration beyond the young Sydney colony. By learning on location, students gain a deeper, more meaningful understanding of early colonial history in the Blue Mountains.

Students are encouraged to ask questions, to think about life in the past, how people lived and worked, and gain an overall historical understanding.

Mountains Tales brings colonial history to life through storytelling and interactive activities, creating educational experiences that help students understand their world, one story at a time.
